3.Year Pre Clinic 2nd Year

Pre-clinical first and second year, in other words second and third year courses are structured as consecutive blocks.
In these years, basic medical courses and predatory courses for clinical medicine, as well as basic clinical bridge topics are increasingly presented within an integrated program.

Find below the curriculum, exam dates, and course descriptions of Pre-clinical first and second year courses pertaining to the 2023-2024 Academic Calendar.

Course Descriptions:

Basic concepts of medical microbiology and introduction to pathology and pharmacology. Topics include the biology of medically important bacterial, viral, parasitic and fungal pathogens, epidemiology of infections, virulence properties of pathogens and diseases they cause, prevention strategies from infections, entire spectrum of cellular response to injury and infection, acute and chronic inflammation, tissue renewal, disorders of hemodynamics and hemostasis. This course also includes factors that affect the body’s response to drugs and metabolisms of drugs, duration of action, absorption, distribution, biotransformation, and elimination of major classes of drugs.

Introduction to neoplasia and immunology. Topics include basic morphologic and biological properties of benign and malignant tumors, molecular basis of carcinogenesis, normal immune response, and mechanism of immunologic reactions, hypersensitivity, autoimmune disorders and immunodeficiencies. This course also includes development of hematopoietic tissues and the diseases affecting white blood cells, diseases of red cells, the anemias and bleeding disorders.

Multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis of musculoskeletal diseases: Mechanisms of diseases, pathologic findings, clinical presentations, laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation and treatment. Topics include normal bone metabolism, developmental abnormalities of bone tissue, infectious diseases of bone and joint, degenerative joint disease, tumors of bone, cartilage  and soft tissue, rheumatologic diseases, basic patterns in dermatologic diseases, skin tumors.

Multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis of respiratory diseases: Mechanisms of diseases, pathologic findings, clinical presentations, laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging and treatment. Topics include diseases of upper respiratory tract, pulmonary infections, tuberculosis, obstructive pulmonary diseases, interstitial lung diseases, pleural diseases, tumors of upper respiratory tract, lung, mediastinum and pleura.

Multidisciplinary  approach to the diagnosis of gastrointestinal  diseases: Mechanisms of diseases, pathologic findings,  clinical presentations, laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging and treatment. Topics include, esophageal diseases, gastritis, peptic ulcer, malabsorption, infectious enterocolitis, inflammatory bowel disease, tumors of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon,  jaundice, viral hepatitis, steatohepatitis, metabolic liver diseases, diseases of gall bladder and biliary tract, tumors of liver and biliary tract, pancreatitis and tumors of pancreas.

Multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis of reproductive, urogenital and endocrine diseases: Mechanisms of diseases, pathologic findings, clinical presentations, physical examination, symptomatology, laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging and treatment. Topics include synthesis, metabolism and clinical effects of hormones, normal puberty and sexual differentiation, obesity, diseases and tumors of adrenal glands, thyroid glands, parathyroid glands and pituitary gland; endocrine pancreas and diabetes mellitus, diseases and tumors of kidney, dialysis and transplantation, urinary tract infection and obstructive uropathy, menstrual cycle, contraception, pregnancy, diseases and tumors of vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus and ovary; male infertility, sexually transmitted diseases, diseases and tumors of the breast.

Multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis of mental and neurological diseases: Mechanisms of diseases, pathologic findings, clinical presentations, laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation and treatment. Topics include, diseases (neuropathies) and tumors of the peripheral nerves, diseases (myopathies) and tumors of the skeletal muscle, diseases and tumors of the eye, neurodevelopmental disorders, brain and spinal cord trauma, cerebrovascular diseases, central nervous system infections, demyelinating diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, dysgenetic syndromes, tumors of the central nervous system, epilepsy, pathophysiology of pain, cognitive functions, disorders of altered consciousness, signs and symptoms in psychiatry, common psychiatric disorders in adults and children, reaction to illness in child, family and physician.

The concept of health status at community level rather than individual level and the measures for health will be introduced. Topics include, measures of well-being, parameters for assessment of the health status of a community, evidence based medicine for public health, common health problems in the world and in Türkiye, preventive measures for common public health problems, quality measures for health, structure of health system, and comparison of different health system models.

This course aims to enable school of medicine students to develop effective and appropriate patient-centered consultation, learn ethical principles, develop professionalism and physical examination skills that are necessary for good clinical practice with learning sessions in small groups and short role-plays with both the instructor/s and their peers. The course covers training on clinical skills in the skils laboratory located at the main campus and the Koc University Hospital.

The aim of the course is research capacity building among undergraduate medical students through a hands-on approach. RMHS adopts a student-centered approach design is based on active learning where student research groups develop a research project and carry out the project until the reporting phase on their own under supervision by a faculty.

Overall objectives of the course are:

  • Define the cross-sectional, cohort, and case-control designs.
  • Differentiate the differences between study designs
  • Interpret the biases in a scientific manuscript
  • Define the effect estimates (relative risk, odds ratio, hazard ratio)
  • Define the role of the chance in scientific studies.
  • Define the descriptive statistics
  • Describe statistical tests (univariate and multivariate)
  • Describe the probability (p value)
  • Interpret the confidence intervals (skill)
  • Define hypothesis (skill)
  • Define the steps of survey design
  • Describe the important aspects of questionnaire-based survey
  • Develop a sound questionnaire
  • Describe the ways to effectively administer a questionnaire
  • Collect data (skill)
  • Visualize the study findings (skill)
  • Analyze collected data (skill)
  • Write a report (skill)
  • Present the findings (skill)
