Educational Aims and Goals

Educational Objective of Koç University School of Medicine

To nurture skilled physicians who protect the individual and public health, have full knowledge of human body’s biological and molecular mechanisms, can apply scientific and evidence based diagnosis and therapy, and who are equipped with basic clinical know-how, skills and approach, and aware of national and international health issues.

Koç University School of Medicine expects all of its students to demonstrate competency in the following areas prior to graduating with the MD degree.

COMPETENCY 1. Health Service Provider

KUSOM Competence- 1.1.

A KUSOM Grad Student;

Integrates the knowledge, skills and attitudes gained from basic medicine, clinical medicine, behavioral sciences and social sciences to provide health services with a high quality and professional attitude.

KUSOM Competence- 1.2.

Fulfills all medical responsibilities; takes into account ethical values without discrimination of language, religion, race, gender and sexual orientation, with a biopsychosocial approach and a fair attitude.

KUSOM Competence- 1.3.

Aims to protect and improve the health of individuals and the society by taking into account the individual, social and environmental factors affecting health, and initiates and conducts studies in line with this goal and participates in ongoing studies.

KUSOM Competence- 1.4.

In the provision of health services; shows a safe, rational and effective approach, considers patient and employee health, acts in cooperation with all healthcare professionals and the society.

KUSOM Competence- 1.5.

Carries out a patient-centered approach that considers the patient’s conditions and preferences, taking into account the most up-to-date evidence-based medical practices in protection, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and rehabilitation processes.

KUSOM Competence- 1.6.

In the provision of health services, s/he takes into account the changes in both regional and global needs that affect health, as well as the changes in the needs of those who apply to them.

 

COMPETENCY 2. Adopting Professional Ethics and Professional Principles

KUSOM Competence- 2.1.

Puts the protection and improvement of human health as his/her primary goal by prioritizing the superior benefits of the patients, and applies his/her knowledge in the most appropriate way in order to heal the patient and fight against diseases.

KUSOM Competence- 2.2.

Works to provide the highest quality of health care through lifelong learning, education and reflection, and by self-leadership learns from his/her mistakes, evaluates himself/herself and strives for excellence by being open to criticism.

KUSOM Competence- 2.3

S/he is highly sensitive to his/her work, knows the needs of his/her patients and their families, and provides the best care for their well-being, regardless of ability to pay.

KUSOM Competence- 2.4.

Establishes a professional relationship with patients and colleagues with a fair, honest, keeping their word, frank and respectful attitude and acts in accordance with high standards of behavior.

KUSOM Competency- 2.5

Respects the individual values, dignity, privacy rights of all people and the “professional secrecy” in the doctor-patient relationship.

 

COMPETENCY 3. Health Advocate

KUSOM Competence- 3.1.

Advocates in clinical and non-clinical settings for the protection and improvement of public health with a social responsibility and social obligation approach that considers the determinants of health.

KUSOM Competence- 3.2.

Plans and executes service delivery, training and consultancy processes related to individual and community health in cooperation with all components for the protection and improvement of health.

KUSOM Competence- 3.3.

Evaluates the impact of national and international health policies on the health of individuals and the society and the provision of health services, and advocates for the elimination of obstacles to the right to health.

 

COMPETENCY 4. Leader-Manager

KUSOM Competence- 4.1.

Takes part in the management of health systems, organizations and health resources.

KUSOM Competence- 4.2.

Demonstrates leadership in healthcare delivery practices.

 

COMPETENCY 5. Team Member

KUSOM Competence- 5.1.

S/he is aware of the duties and responsibilities of the team members he works with, communicates effectively with them and takes on different team roles when necessary.

KUSOM Competence- 5.2.

In his/her professional practices, s/he works in harmony and effectively with his/her colleagues and other professional groups.

 

COMPETENCY 6. Communicator

KUSOM Competence- 6.1.

Communicates effectively with patients and their relatives.

KUSOM Competence- 6.2.

Communicates effectively with individuals and groups that require a special approach and have different socio-cultural characteristics.

KUSOM Competence- 6.3.

Communicates effectively with colleagues, all healthcare professionals, other professional groups, institutions and organizations.

 

COMPETENCY 7. Scientist

KUSOM Competence- 7.1.

Plans, implements and reports scientific research.

KUSOM Competence- 7.2.

Integrates the evidence obtained from scientific research into the processes of promoting and protecting the health of the individual and society, diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

KUSOM Competence- 7.3.

Uses information technologies to increase the effectiveness of his/her work on health care, research and education.

 

COMPETENCY 8. Lifelong Learner

KUSOM Competence- 8.1.

Constantly develops professional activities through continuous learning, follows and evaluates new knowledge and practices in the field of health; integrate existing information.
