Course Descriptions:

Morphology of the eukaryotic cell, macromolecules, cellular organelles, membranes and membrane transport, biological molecules, properties and functions of enzymes, prokaryotic cells, stem cells, cellular metabolism, carbohydrate, nucleotide metabolism, genetic disorders of metabolism, basic concepts of biostatistics and epidemiology, electro-medical instrumentation, biophysical properties of cells and cellular circuits.

Anatomy, histology, embryology, physiology and biochemical features of musculoskeletal system, basic anatomical terms, structure and connections of bones and joints, neural networks, histology of bones, muscle, nerves and skin, radiologic and clinical correlations of these structures, physiology of receptors and their connections to the spinal cord, types of muscle, physiology of fatigue and pain, metabolism of amino acids, lipids and lipoproteins, dissection of face, neck and extremities, inspection of models and interactive software.

Anatomy and histology of the heart and vascular system, physiology of the heart muscle, contraction, fluid mechanics of vascular system, local and systemic regulation of blood flow and blood pressure, anatomy and histology of thorax, lungs and upper respiratory passages, respiratory mechanics, ventilation and perfusion in the lungs, central mechanisms of respiratory control, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and thermal systems related to circulation and respiration, dissections, model examination and interactive software to investigate morphology and physiology of these systems.

Anatomy and histology of the alimentary tract and related organs, embryology of alimentary tract and its disorders, physiology of secretion, digestion, absorption and elimination, morphology and functions of salivary glands, liver, pancreas, bile formation, biochemical features of digestion and absorption, absorption of water, electrolytes, carbohydrates and lipids, structure and functions of vitamins, regulatory mechanisms in the body, total energy balance, physiologic changes in states of stress and exercise, regulation of body heat, application of basic knowledge into clinical conditions.

Anatomy and histology of organs related to the urinary system, male and female reproductive systems, the pelvic floor, blood vessels and nerves of pelvic viscera, embryonic development of urinary and genital systems and their abnormalities, morphology and functions of the kidney, glomerular filtration, reabsorption, and secretion, regulation of volume and composition of body fluids, transport in the urinary tract, mechanisms and disorders of erection and ejaculation, structure and functions of the thyroid, parathyroid, pituitary, pineal and adrenal glands, biosynthesis of hormones, mechanisms of hormone action.

Anatomy and histology of central and peripheral nervous system and special sensory organs, functional anatomy of cerebral hemispheres, cerebellum, brain stem, spinal cord, ascending and descending pathways, histology of nerve tissue, eyes, photoreceptors and ears, development of the nervous system and its abnormalities, correlation of morphology with imaging modalities, neurophysiological and biophysical mechanisms of nerve functions, generation and conduction of nerve impulses, reflexes, behavioral, cognitive and emotional patterns and their psychological correlations.

This course aims to enable school of medicine students to develop effective and appropriate patient-centered consultation, learn ethical principles, develop professionalism and physical examination skills that are necessary for good clinical practice with learning sessions in small groups and short role-plays with both the instructor/s and their peers. The course covers training on basic clinical skills in the skils laboratory located at the main campus.
