Schrödinger's equation has been magnificently successful. Its linearity also has significant advantages for computations and physical interpretations of the results. With interest in quantum phenomena that require smaller and smaller scales, it is no longer possible to have isolated systems. The momentum exchange between interacting particles is not avoidable in open systems. This interaction leads to dephasing, dissipation and relaxation. For instance, at resonances, amplitudes go to infinity while the wave function still preserves integrability.
