1. When did KUSOM begin admitting students?
KUSOM admitted its first students in September 2010.

2. What is the quota for KUSOM?

3. What is the medium of instruction?
The medium of instruction is English.

4. How will the English proficiency be assessed?
The students have to submit their TOEFL scores to the Registrar’s Office with other documents required for admission. If they do not have a valid TOEFL score, they have to take KU’s Institutional TOEFL examination. Further information can be found on this page.

5. What if I fail the proficiency exam?
The students who fail the proficiency exam are enrolled in the English Learning Center (ELC) of Koç University, where they will be offered courses on different academic and social topics along with courses on English language.

6. Where is KUSOM located?
KUSOM is located in the main Campus of Koç University in Rumelifeneri, Sariyer. The first three years of medical education (pre-clinical years) is provided in this main campus. The 3 years of clinical training is provided at Koç University Hospital located in Topkapi region of Istanbul.

7. Is there a training hospital?

Koc University Hospital is opened in October 2014.

The hospital has 477 inpatient rooms which consists of 404 single patient rooms and 73 Intensive care units. Of those, 366 rooms are dedicated for adult patients and 111 rooms are dedicated for pediatric patients.

There are 13 operating rooms and 4 delivery rooms at Koç University Hospital. In addition, 22 chemo units along with 205 examination rooms are available. 

There is also a very sophisticated radiotherapy center along with intensive care and intervention services, with particular focus on oncology, cancer, genetics and infectious diseases.

8. What are KUSOM's main principles of education?
In accordance with Koç University's general principles, SOM aims to provide world class education to a small number of students with outstanding qualities. Starting with their first year, the students are encouraged to participate in research in selected fields of biomedical sciences. The students take a Core Program in their freshman year which prepares them for the following years. This program which consists of courses such as communication skills, history of civilization, introduction to medical sciences, along with natural and social sciences equips the students with the scientific concepts they will encounter in the future, and enables them to understand the society they live in and solve its problems as social and humane individuals.

9. How is the medical program structured?
The students are offered a system-based medical education within an integrated program starting with their second year. Along with the classical organ systems, special emphasis is placed on important research fields in biomedical sciences such as cancer, neuroscience and molecular medicine. In accordance with the general educational principals, the program is structured as to enable the students to be autonomous and responsible individuals and provide them the necessary time to participate in independent studies, discussions, and research projects in addition to their curriculum. They are encouraged to use the library and the electronic resources freely.

10. How is the clinical medical training provided?
The students of KUSOM are offered lectures, courses, and seminars on basic sciences such as historical development of medicine, ethical concepts, and foundations and practices of modern medicine starting with their first year. During the early years, they have the opportunity to acquire communication skills, get familiar with the health problems of the society, and examine the health system. The students are offered long term clerkships in major branches in the fourth year, short term clerkships in various specialties in the fifth year, and a pre-graduation internship training for 12 months in the sixth year.

11. Are there internship opportunities in Turkey or abroad?
Opportunities for exchanging students with various educational institutions and especially summer internships are sought and supported starting with the first years. KUSOM has memorandum of agreements with various universities in North America and Europe, as well as GHLO membership.

12. How can the international students apply for KUSOM?

The applicants can be invited for an interview if deemed necessary. If the applicant is abroad, the interview can be done via skype or video-conference.

13. What are the required minimum diploma grades and test scores to apply as international student?

Below are the preferred tests and diplomas. We strongly advice the applicants to take at least one of these tests if they do not have an IB diploma.

MCAT: 504 (min 126 from each of 4 areas )

SAT (old): 2000

SAT (new): 1410

IB : 40

ACT: 31

 
14. Do you require Turkish proficiency?
Starting with the 4th year, SOM students will interact with the patients in bedside teaching. Therefore we require international students to provide C1 level Turkish proficiency (TOMER) at the end of 3rd year.

15. How can the transfer students apply for KUSOM?
