BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES:
During NM elective, 5th year students attend all routine activities of the department. Student activities are supervised by the tutors. There is no nightshift during the elective.
In diagnostic part, they observe scintigraphic studies, SPECT, SPECT/CT and various molecular PET/CT studies. Together we discuss indications for imaging methods and their results. They also observe protocols in the Hot-LAB, Synthesis-LAB and RIA-LAB studies.
In outpatient clinic, they evaluate patients, mostly with thyroid cancers and hyperthyroidism. Together we discuss their treatment and follow-up protocols. They also see in patients with metastatic neuroendocrine tumors, metastatic prostate cancer, primary/metastatic liver cancers.
In inpatient clinic, they learn the protocols of radioiodine ablation/treatment and they also observe real life experience with patients. They join the daily patients visit. They also observe THERANOSTIC therapies in patients with metastatic NETs and prostate cancers and alpha particule therapies.They can see transarterial radioembolization procedures in patients with liver cancers.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the elective a 5th year old student will; have understanding on various diagnostic and therapeutic activities in NM department and related clinical stiuations.
ASSESSMENT OR EVALUATION:
Student’s knowledge, competencies including patient care, communication skills, professionalism and practice-based learning are observed throughout the elective. Although not graded, feedback on these competencies are provided continuously.
Students will present a case at the end of the elective.
