During Psychiatry Research Elective, 5th year students should take active role with integrity, honesty and compassion for conducting a research study. Studies may be either on basic science or clinical research.



To be accepted for the research elective, they need to contact with the director at least 2 months before
their elective period for the decision of the project and arranging prerequisites as equipments and IRB files.



Advisor may be either from adult psychiatry or from child and adolescent psychiatry.



Prerequisites are:



to identify a faculty research mentor and proposed project.



to submit a brief (1-2 page) summary of a proposed research project and a research plan with

study design and timeline, to be approved by the director



to complete the CITI online training.



to obtain regulatory approval for the project, as appropriate. In most cases this will include

writing and submitting a protocol to the IRB.




During the elective, student should meet with their advisor at least twice a week. Students may either work on on ongoing research, collect data, contribute to the analysis and writing process. Students may also work on the design and IRB approval processes of a new study. Thirdly, they may take active role on the process of a meta-analysis study. Students who participate in a research elective are expected to present their work at a seminar hour or at a national/international congress. A wider list of possible research projects is as follows:




A short clinical or laboratory research study, testing a hypothesis;



An evaluation of a service or specific intervention;



A detailed and extensive review of the literature on a topic with illustrative case-based examples;



An audit of a service or component of a service comparing with accepted standards;



A standard setting observational study from which audits might follow;



A survey to establish levels of knowledge, or skills, behaviours, values, beliefs about a specific topic;



An educational project that produces material to facilitate, teach or train the students, staff, patients or the wider public.








Brief: Broadly the objectives of the Research Elective are to


(1) increase skills to identify, develop, and answer scientific questions,


(2) advance your understanding of how to build a research career.



At the end of the elective a 5th year medical student will have a broad understanding of a research career in psychiatry.

research project.



Demonstrates the ability to describe and explain the results obtained and situate these results in
the existing literature.



Demonstrates the ability to write and present an abstract at a local, national or international



Demonstrates a clear understanding of the structure and purpose of scientific writing.



Demonstrates the ability to participate in the writing, revision and publication of a manuscript
