During Dermatology Elective, 5th year students attend all routine activities of the Department. Student activities are supervised by the tutors. There are no nightshifts during the elective.



Morning outpatient clinics start at 8:30. During outpatient clinics, students see patients together with the tutors and discuss every case. Students will be able to attend to basic excisional surgeries, laser sessions, observe computer-based whole body scanning of nevi and treatment of skin lesions with cryosurgery and electrocauterisation. Students will be able to attend to cosmetic procedures performed by tutors. Hands-on learning will be provided as much as possible.



Students will attend to dermatopathology meeting which is held once monthly in a pre-planned date.



Students attend research activities during the elective. They are encouraged to join a research project that they are interested and carry on after the elective.








At the end of the elective a 5th year medical student will have a broad understanding on various activities of the Dermatology and Venereology Department and related clinical terminology and understand clinical features of dermatological diseases



Specific objectives are;




… be able to take focused history of a patient with dermatological disorder



… be able to perform basic dermatological examination of a patient including basic dermoscopy



… identify primary and secondary skin lesions and make differential diagnosis of specific skin conditions


… be able to obtain informed consent from a patient for photodocumentation and dermatological procedures



… be able to perform punch biopsy



… be able to prepare and assess KOH examination for fungal infection








Student’s knowledge, competencies including patient care, communication, professionalism and practice-based learning are observed throughout the elective. Although not graded, feedback on these competencies are provided continuously.



Students will present a topic and a related case at the end of the elective.



“KUSOM Clinical Performance Evaluation Form” is used for reporting.
