BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES:

 

 

 

Obstetricians and gynecologists (OB-GYN) are physicians who provide comprehensive care to women in all phases of their lives. An OB-GYN has expertise in female reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth.

 

 

Students rotating in the obstetrics and gynecology department at Koc University Hospital will be exposed to all aspects related to the care of women. They will be acting at the level of a sub-intern and will work under the supervision of the department staff and attendings both in the inpatient and outpatient setting. They are expected to participate in rounds and be actively involved in the management of patients.

 

 

During Obstetrics and Gynecology Elective, 5th year students attend all routine activities of the Department. Student activities are supervised by the tutors. There are no nightshifts during the elective. Students will participate in the surgical care of patients in the labor and delivery suite, operating wards and assisted reproductive technology facilities. They will attend a large array of procedures ranging from normal vaginal deliveries to cesarean sections, IVF procedures, laparoscopies and major pelvic and abdominal surgeries for cancers of the female genital tracts.

 

 

Students are encouraged to be inquisitive and to be actively involved in research projects conducted by the department. They will be expected to make a brief oral presentation on a topic of their choice to the house staff and faculty at the end of their rotation.

 

 

Students are expected to be respectful of all patients and staff during their elective. They must have empathy and compassion when dealing with patients. They must maintain a level of professional conduct and adhere to the principles of patient-doctor confidentiality during their activities in the department.

 

 

 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 

 

 

  1. Obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Medicine:

 

 

– Perform a complete history and physical examination of a woman of reproductive age, including a routine antenatal assessment with general health and vaccination recommendations before pregnancy

 

 

– Perform a complete history and physical examination of a pregnant woman, including establishing gestational age based on clinical and ultrasonographic data

 

 

– Prescribe the recommended laboratory and imaging exams during pregnancy at the correct intervals in correspondence with national and international guidelines

 

 

– Understand the importance of ultrasonography during pregnancy and its role in the diagnosis and management of both maternal and fetal conditions

 

 

– Understand the normal course of an uncomplicated pregnancy and its major checkpoints

 

 

– Identify a high-risk or complicated pregnancy based on history, clinical examination or laboratory and ultrasonographic data

 

 

– Participate in a normal vaginal delivery starting at the onset of labor through delivery, including cervical assessments, cardiotocography, labor induction and neuraxial anesthesia

 

 

– Participate in the initial care of the newborn in the delivery room

 

 

– Participate in an operative vaginal delivery and understand its indications

 

 

– Participate in an episiotomy and understand its technique and indications

 

 

– Understand the indications of a planned or urgent cesarean section

 

 

– Participate in a cesarean section

 

 

– Understand the normal course of the post-partum period both after a normal vaginal delivery or a cesarean section

 

 

– Have a basic knowledge of recommendations regarding contraception and general care of the post-partum patient

 

 

 

  1. Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology:

 

 

 

– Perform a complete history of a woman in the reproductive period and after menopause, including the collection menstrual, contraceptive, sexual and gynecologic information

 

 

– Perform a complete physical examination of a woman in the reproductive period and after menopause including a basic abdominal and pelvic examination, speculum examination and pap smear/HPV detection tests

 

 

– Understand the indication of a pelvic ultrasound and its basic elements in a woman presenting with gynecological complaints

 

 

– Understand the indication of laboratory tests (hormonal tests) and their use

 

 

– Understand the importance and procedures of screening for breast and cervical cancers

 

 

– Conduct a complaint-centered interrogation of a patient regarding the most common presenting symptoms: abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain and contraception

 

 

– Understand the indications of the most common procedures in gynecology (hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, hysterectomy, oophorectomy, and gynecologic cancer surgery)

 

 

– Participate in a hysteroscopy

 

 

– Participate in a laparoscopic procedure

 

 

– Participate in a laparotomy for benign indication

 

 

– Participate in a laparotomy for a malignant indication (cancer of the genital tract)

 

 

 

  1. Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility:

 

 

 

– Understand the different types of assisted reproductive technologies

 

 

– Understand the indications of assisted reproductive technologies

 

 

– Prescribe the necessary workup in a couple with infertility

 

 

– Participate in one assisted reproductive technology procedure

 

 

 

STUDENT EVALUATION

 

 

 

Students will receive continuous feedback about their knowledge, clinical skills and patient contact from the department physicians. They will not be graded on anything except attendance.

 

 

Students will be expected to present a brief oral presentation about a patient case or a relevant obstetrics and/or gynecology subject during their rotation at the end of their elective.
