During Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Elective, 5th year students attend all routine activities of the Department. Student activities are supervised by the tutors. There are no nightshifts during the elective.



On Monday students attend weekly case meeting of Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department from 7:30 to 8:30 and the on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Orthopaedics and Traumatology visit. On Friday students attend weekly case and seminar meeting of our department from 7:30 to 9:00. During the elective, student tells one research paper to tutors. During outpatient and inpatient clinics, students see patients together with the tutors and discuss the cases. Students observe interventional therapies like intraarticular or muscular injections using or without using ultrasound. Also students can observe physiotherapists during rehabilitation seasons.



Students attend research activities during the elective. They are encouraged to join a research project that they are interested and carry on after the elective.



One day of a week student will have free study time.








At the end of the elective, a 5th year medical student will have a broad understanding on various activities of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department and related clinical terminology and understand clinical features of musculoskeletal and neurologic disorders.



Specific objectives are;




… be able to take focused history of a patient with musculoskeletal and neurologic disorder



… examine a patient including inspection, palpation of landmarks, assessment of range of motion and neurologic examination on the aspect of musculoskeletal disorders (specially back, neck, shoulder and knee disorders)



… identify basic landmarks on a shoulder, knee and spine X-Ray and identify basic pathologic findings



… distinguish the red flags of low back pain



… play an active role while planning a physical therapy protocol for low back pain, neck pain, rotator cuff pathology and knee arthrosis



… be able to obtain informed consent from a patient for injection



… be able to perform the role of a 2nd assistant during injections



… be able to write out a prescription for basic musculoskeletal disorders



… be able to write consultation note



… observe and learn communication skills with patient and physical therapist



… be able to write request form for radiology and electromyography








Student’s knowledge, competencies including patient care, communication, professionalism and practice-based learning are observed throughout the elective. Although not graded, feedback on these competencies are provided continuously.



Students will present a topic and a related case at the end of the elective.



“KUSOM Clinical Performance Evaluation Form” is used for reporting.
