A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES

 

 

 

During Pediatric Surgery Elective, 5th-year students attend all routine activities of the Department including research activity both in the clinic and basic science. Student activities are supervised by the tutors. There are no obligatory nightshifts during the elective. However, students are welcome and encouraged to involve in the emergency cases during night calls under faculty supervision.

 

 

There are morning visits every day between 8:00 am and 9:00 am which are continued by either O.R. or clinics. After a brief introduction to O.R. in the first week, students may scrub and attend the surgery. Surgeries are often planned several days before. During outpatient clinics, students see patients together with the tutors and discuss every case.

 

 

Students attend research activities during the elective. They are encouraged to join ongoing research and/or start their own research project in the clinic that they are interested in and carry on after the elective.

 

 

The students will also be able to attend to Pediatric Urology and Fetal Surgery meetings, research activity, visits, clinics, and surgeries.

 

 

The students are also encouraged to attend lab meetings, data analysis meetings, journal clubs and lab hours as well as present articles published in high impact journals to improve their skills for presenting case and knowledge about the particular disorders.

 

 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 

 

 

At the end of the elective, a 5th-year medical student will have a broad understanding on various activities of the Pediatric Surgery Department and related clinical terminology and understand clinical features of disorders playing a role in the surgical decision and general indications of surgery.

 

 

Specific objectives are as following: They will

 

 

be able to take the focused history of a patient with various pediatric surgery cases

 

 

be able to perform a basic physical examination

 

 

be able to decide which diagnostic tool they are going use in various diseases

 

 

be able to perform a minor interventional procedure such as nasogastric tube insertion, urethral catheterization, and post-operative wound care

 

 

be able to consent patients

 

 

be able to scrub for pediatric surgery cases and assist the draping process

 

 

be able to perform a role of a 2nd assistant during the surgical process

 

 

be able to complete hospital record documentation including operative reports
