BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES:

 

 

 

During Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (IDCM) Elective, 5th year students attend all routine activities of the Department. Student activities are supervised by the tutors. Elective of one-month period will include, morning visits in both inpatient clinics and intensive care units, join patient examination in the outpatient clinic under a faculty or staff clinician supervision, evaluate methods used to identify infectious agents in the clinical microbiology laboratory, and additionally research activities. During elective, students will have the opportunity to attend department meetings on every weekday.

 

 

Morning visits start every day at 08:30, which also continued by outpatient unit. There are no nightshifts during the elective. After a brief introduction in the first week, students may examine patients both in IDCM clinics or the other clinics that are consulted. During outpatient clinics, students may shadow staff IDCM physicians and discuss cases. Students may attend research activities during the elective. They are encouraged to join ongoing research and/or start their own research project in the clinic that they are interested in and carry on after the elective.

 

 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

 

 

 

The student will be able to learn common infectious agents, the epidemiology of infectious diseases, specializing in the various clinical, laboratory and public health aspects of infectious diseases and the management of patients with infections both community acquired or health-care related, including perioperative, intensive care, and the immunocompromised host, and mechanisms of health maintenance to prevent disease.

 

 

 

Specific Objectives are as Following.

 

– The student will be able to identify common infectious agents and the diseases that they cause.

 

– The student will be able to evaluate methods used to identify infectious agents in the clinical microbiology laboratory.

 

– The student will be able to describe the epidemiology of infectious agents including how infectious diseases are transmitted.

 

– The student will be able to recognize and diagnose common infectious diseases from the clinical presentation and associated microbiology.

 

– The student will be able to assess treatment strategies including the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents and common mechanisms of antimicrobial action and resistance.

 

– The student will be able to explain interventions employed to prevent infectious diseases including infection control measure and vaccines

 

– Be able to take a directed history and perform physical examination and investigation to differentiate amongst the etiologies of these clinical presentations

 

– Manage infective causes of these syndromes, judging necessity of antimicrobial therapy, choice of empiric or directed therapy, and use of non-antimicrobial modalities

 

– Manage immunocompromised patients, including those with HIV/AIDS

 

– Able to recognize and manage health-care related infection, including postoperative and intensive care related illness, and institute control systems

 

– Be able to perform a minor interventional procedure such as nasogastric tube insertion, urethral catheterization, and post-operative wound care

 

– Be able to take blood culture, urine culture, wound culture.

 

 

 

ASSESSMENT OR EVALUATION:

 

 

 

Student’s knowledge, competencies including patient care, communication, professionalism, and practice-based learning are observed throughout the elective. Although not graded, feedback on these competencies is provided continuously.

 

Students will present a topic and a related case during the elective.
